The sight of dust-red elephants wallowing, rolling and spraying each other with the midnight blue waters of the palm-shaded Galana River is one of the most evocative images in Africa. This, along with the 300-kilometre-long Yatta Plateau, the longest lava flow in the world, makes for an adventure unlike any other in the Tsavo East. The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust –red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, pods of hippo, crocodile, waterbucks, lesser Kudu, gerenuk and the prolific bird life features 500 recorded species.
Day 1:Nairobi to Tsavo West National Park
- Depart from Nairobi and head towards Tsavo West National Park (approximately 4-5 hours’ drive).
- Arrive at Tsavo West National Park and check-in the camp/lodge. There are various options available, including lodges and budget tented camps, catering to different budgets and preferences.
- Enjoy a delicious lunch at your accommodation and take some time to relax and settle in.
- Embark on an afternoon game drive in an open roof 4×4 safari vehicle with our experienced guide. Tsavo West National Park is known for its diverse landscapes, including volcanic hills, open plains, and the scenic Mzima Springs.
- Explore the park’s different habitats, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and a variety of bird species.
- Visit the Shetani Lava Flow, a striking black lava field formed by volcanic activity. Take a short walk along the lava flow to observe its unique geological features.
- As the sun begins to set, capture the beautiful landscapes and wildlife in the warm golden light.
- Return to the loge/camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Tsavo West Game Drives to Tsavo East National Park
- Start your day with an early breakfast and a checkout.
- Depart Tsavo West National Park to Tsavo East which is separated by Mombasa highway
- Explore different areas of the park, including the scenic Chyulu Hills and the iconic Rhino Valley, which is home to a significant population of black rhinos.
- Spend the morning game viewing around the park, focusing on specific species or exploring the park’s unique features like the Yatta Plateau or the Athi River.
- Bid farewell to Tsavo West National Park and begin your journey back to Nairobi/Mombasa.
